Understanding Ceramic Tile Adhesives and EN 12004 – A Global Performance Standard

From C1 to C2TE S1 Systems – Formulation Strategies, Product Compliance & Chemion's Full Support

What Are Ceramic Tile Adhesives (CTA)?

Ceramic tile adhesives (CTAs) are cementitious mortars used to fix ceramic, porcelain, or natural stone tiles to floors and walls. Unlike traditional cement-sand mortars, modern CTAs are dry-mix formulations enhanced with polymers and additives to meet application performance and regulatory requirements.

They offer:
- Greater bonding strength
- Extended working and open times
- Flexibility and crack bridging
- Compatibility with diverse substrates
- Low dust, improved slip control, easy application

What Is EN 12004?

EN 12004 is the European standard defining the performance requirements for cementitious, dispersion-based and reactive adhesives used for fixing ceramic tiles. It includes performance classes based on adhesion strength, slip, open time, and flexibility.

Main Classes under EN 12004

- C1: ≥ 0.5 MPa adhesion (dry, wet, heat, freeze-thaw)
- C2: ≥ 1.0 MPa adhesion under same conditions
- T: ≤ 0.5 mm slip (vertical surfaces)
- E: ≥ 0.5 MPa after 30 min open time
- S1/S2: Deformable adhesive ≥ 2.5 mm (S1) or ≥ 5 mm (S2)

How Are EN 12004 Properties Tested?

- Initial adhesion: EN 1348
- Open time: EN 1346
- Slip: EN 1308
- Thermal cycling: EN 1348
- Deformability: EN 12002

Formulation Philosophy: C1 vs. C2TE S1

Chemion provides guidelines based on global dry mix practices that balance performance with cost optimization.
